June is National Indigenous History Month<\/strong> in Canada. This is a time to reflect on, learn about, and honour the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis peoples<\/strong>. For newcomers, this month offers a powerful opportunity to understand the deeper story of the land you now call home.<\/p>\n

At JVS Toronto<\/strong>, we believe that building a successful life and career in Canada involves more than just finding a job \u2014 it\u2019s also about becoming part of the community. That\u2019s why, as part of our commitment to supporting newcomers, our pre-arrival program Canada<\/strong> InfoNet<\/strong> hosted a special webinar on Indigenous Awareness<\/strong> led by Chrystal Tabobandung<\/strong>, an Anishnabekwe from Wasauksing First Nation. She shared her insights on Indigenous culture, history, and the importance of reconciliation in Canada.<\/p>\n

So why is this important for newcomers \u2014 especially jobseekers?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Because learning about Indigenous peoples isn\u2019t just about the past \u2014 it\u2019s about the present and the future. As Canadian workplaces become more focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), cultural awareness is becoming an essential skill.<\/p>\n

Employers value candidates who understand the Canadian context, including the legacy of colonialism and the importance of reconciliation. Whether you\u2019re applying for a job at a large corporation or a non-profit, showing respect for Indigenous culture can demonstrate your cultural competency \u2014 something that more and more hiring managers are looking for.<\/p>\n

It also helps build stronger communities. Understanding the people who have lived on this land for thousands of years fosters respectful relationships and supports Canada\u2019s broader efforts toward truth and reconciliation.<\/p>\n
