Viviana's Success Story

During my first correspondence with my protégé, Vivian, I was instantly impressed with her.   It was hard not to be.  She had excellent experience and prestigious credentials from her career as a journalist in her native Argentina.  Viviana’s challenge was to translate and sell her impressive skills to the Canadian broadcasting marketplace.

Our first step together was to revamp her resume.  Even though Viviana’s resume illustrated some excellent skills and accomplishments, there were some technical words and jargon that needed to be worded properly so that they were impactful in English.  Viviana worked very hard to revise her resume and in the end, she presented an excellent finished product.  Our next step was to work on her cover letter.  Viviana had an excellent sense of what was required in a cover letter, so it simply required some fine-tuning to take it from good to great.  During and after our time working on her resume and letters.  Of course the biggest priority for Viviana was to send her materials out to as many media outlets as possible.  She acquainted herself with companies very quickly and made efforts to correspond with them often.

The thing I most admired about Viviana was her persistence.  She took on a job outside of her chosen field in order to make ends meet while she pursued her job search in broadcasting.  Throughout her search, even though she expressed frustration, she kept looking and stayed positive.  Viviana’s hard work and positive attitude paid off!  She is now working for The Discovery Channel, a television outlet that focuses primarily on life sciences programming.  She started as a Researcher and then moved-up to an Editorial Assistant position.  She is doing some fabulous networking and is learning the “ins and outs” of the Canadian Broadcasting industry.

Viviana has proven that she has the intelligence, determination and enthusiasm to succeed.  It was indeed a privilege to be her mentor and to support her on her journey.  Congratulations Viviana!
